This is a list of all known versions of Wolfenstein 3-D and it also includes all known changes between the versions. 1)

Wolfenstein 3-D was developed by id Software and released as a Shareware, 3-Episode and 6-Episode version. A package called “Nocturnal Missions” was also distributed which upgraded the 3-Episode version into the 6-Episode version.
During Alpha stages there were also separate EGA and VGA versions, but the EGA version was dropped later on in development.

Changes compared to Version 1.0 (1992-05-05)

Gameplay differences

  • Secret doors do not slide, they disappear when opened instead
  • There's no “End Game” option in the main menu when plaing a game

General differences

  • There is no episode selection screen
  • The help screen has a red background and green text
  • The help screen is hugely unfinished
  • There is a separate “Ordering Information” and “Read This” section in the main menu
  • The main menu cursor always starts off at “New Game” instead starting off at “Read This!” the first time
  • The memory values indicated on the initializing screen are considerably bigger
  • In the change view menu, the bottom part of the screen is blue
  • The debug cheats don't need to be activated in any way
  • The debug cheats work using F10 instead of Tab
  • The F10 + O debug cheat actually shows something useful
  • The initializing screen shows wether playing the EGA or VGA version instead of indicating the publisher
  • Using the switch in the exit elevator doesn't change its position
  • No version number displayed on the initializing screen

Graphical differences

  • The options title is slightly differently shaded
  • The face for difficulty skill 3 is slightly different
  • The high scores table looks completely different
  • The HUD weapon graphics are less shaded
  • The B.J. face graphics on the HUD are slightly different
  • The “Get Psyched!” graphic is significantly smaller
  • The pop-up windows look completely different
  • The credits screen looks completely different
  • The initializing screen uses different colors for the availability of memory for the different memory types
  • The title screen is quite different
  • The HUD key graphics are shaded differently
  • The Demo title graphic is completely different
  • The Water Puddle graphic is slightly different
  • The Green Barrel graphic is slightly different
  • The Floor Lamp graphic is slightly different
  • The Pillar graphic is completely different
  • The Green Plant graphic is slightly different
  • The Skeleton graphic is slightly different
  • The Vase graphic is completely different
  • The Ceiling Light graphic is slightly different
  • The Suit of Armor graphic is slightly different
  • The Ammo Clip graphic is different
  • The Machine Gun pickup graphic is missing its shadow
  • The Chaingun pickup graphic is missing its shadow
  • The Jewels (tresure chest) graphic is completely different; it's just a bunch of jewels laying about
  • The Crown graphic shadow is different
  • The Extra Life graphic is different
  • The Guard graphics have some misplaced transparent pixels between its legs
  • The SS graphics are lacking shading seen in the final
  • The Hans Grosse graphics are highly unfinished

Level design differences

  • E1L1 - Some enemies are placed differently
  • E1L1 - Some floor types are different
  • E1L1 - The secret area in the Hitler portrait is inaccessible because a table is placed in front of its entrance
  • E1L1 - The first secret room by the exit is slightly different
  • E1L1 - There's actually a secret floor code beneath the secret elevator
  • E1L2 - Some enemies are placed differently
  • E1L2 - Some rooms are larger and there are certain rooms that have later been removed
  • E1L2 - The floor type in the secret room with treasure is different
  • E1L2 - A door is missing from one of the prison cells in the prison close to the start
  • E1L3 - Some enemies are placed differently
  • E1L3 - Some floor types are different
  • E1L3 - There are some more rooms in the “room labyrinth”
  • E1L3 - Some secret areas are slightly different
  • E1L4 - Major parts of the level differ
  • E1L5 - Major parts of the level differ
  • E1L6 - Basically the same level design, but vastly more rooms
  • E1L7 - Basically the same level design, but vastly more rooms
  • E1L8 - Basically the same level design, but vastly more rooms
  • E1L9 - The level has been altered slightly, the passage that leads out in particular
  • E1L10 - The level is completely different

Bugs

  • Shooting may also causes enemies in other rooms to activate

Missing features

  • The easiest difficulty is missing
  • There is no episode selection screen
  • There's no parental advisory screen displayed during startup
  • Extra lives cannot be picked up
  • There's no victory screen when flipping the switch in an elevator; you are taken directly to the next level
  • Hans Grosse's functions have not yet been implemented

Miscellaneous

  • There's no exit screen
  • The main game .EXE is called WOLF1V.EXE

Dear Beta Tester:

You have been selected to Beta-test Id Software's hot new game, 
Wolfenstein 3-D.  If you do NOT have an account on Software Creations, 
you MUST get an account before you can access Id Software's BETA 
CONFERENCE (63).  The numbers are (508) 365-9668 [9600 baud], 
(508) 368-4137 [2400] &  (508) 365-9669 [1200].  After you are 
registered on Software Creations, you should go into Conference 63 
and download Wolfenstein 3-D.

There will be a Beta Form included in the .ZIP file that you should 
fill out and upload back into the Conference.  Periodically, there 
will be more recent Beta uploads from us that you should download.  
Included with them will be a list of the bugs that were fixed since 
the last upload.

You will be Beta testing parts 1-3: the entire trilogy.  Part One in 
VGA will be first for beta, then EGA of Part One, then Parts Two and 
Three in both video modes.

We want you to find as many bugs as possible in this game (except for 
those listed below).  Try really weird things, try to break this game 
down -- we dare ya!  Please run through all 3 difficulty modes 
("Don't Hurt Me", "Bring 'Em On", and "I am Death incarnate!") and 
list any bugs you find.  Try and find all the hidden areas!

We want your honest opinions about this game.  If you are a big Keen 
fan, this may NOT be the game for you.  But, if you're the kind that 
could get into Wing Commander, you'll love this game.  Any suggestions 
on improving the game in ANY way will be appreciated.

These are the things NOT finished at this Beta so far:
* A complete Demo loop
* End-of-level Bonus Screen
* Between-level Screen
* High Scores finished
* The readable text within the game (Read This! and Ordering Info)
* End of Game stuff (win or lose)

Please upload your forms as soon as possible, we don't have a lot of 
time before this game is released: April 15th.

Beta Testers:

This is the final BETA release for Wolfenstein 3-D, Episode One: Escape
From Wolfenstein.  In the upcoming weeks we will be working on episodes
2-6, so stay tuned for more Nazi-blasting and Big Boss surprises!

Things fixed/added in this BETA since last time:

* Jason has added STEREO SOUND for those of you that have the NEW Sound
  Blaster Pro!  Hear a Nazi yell to your left, you hear it through the
  left speaker!  Cool!  Make sure you read the SB_NOTE.TXT file to see
  how you need to set up your IRQ, etc. if you have your card set
  differently than the factory defaults.

* For those of you who are sick enough, we added the DogYipe digitized
  sound!  (hehe)

* There are now RATIOs at the end of each level, plus the time it took
  you to get through.  There's also a PAR TIME -- if you beat it, you
  will be getting MEGAPOINTS!  If you can't get anywhere near the time,
  you are NOT an expert Wolfenstein player.  The PAR times were taken
  from me (John Romero) playing with both the mouse AND keyboard, cruising
  through each room towards the elevator (not really blazing through),
  killing everything in each room, then adding 30 seconds to the time.
  An excellent example of the speed achieved with mouse&keyboard movement
  is demonstrated by the DEMO.  Let the game go from the Title screen,
  Credits, then DEMO and you'll see.  At least the PARs give you something
  to work towards!  Also, the RATIOs tell you how many percent of the
  KILLABLE objects you toasted, SECRET passages you found, and percent of
  TREASURE you got.  If you get 100% on any of these -- BONUS!

* The DEMO mode only works correctly the FIRST time you run the game.
  We're working on fixing this, believe you me!

* We added an F7 (QuickSave) and F8 (QuickLoad) that is TRULY FAST!  If
  you're having trouble getting through this game -- no longer a problem!
  If you haven't selected a SAVENAME the first time you play, you will be
  thrown into the F2 SAVE GAME screen.  Afterwards, the game just says
  "Saving..." for less than a second!

* We added a "BABY MODE" for everyone that can't even handle "Don't Hurt Me!".
  Yes, even your girlfriends can play this game!

* The Big Boss Dude is lots easier to kill (you can even kill him with a
  machine gun!).  The end of the game isn't finished yet, as well as the
  articles "Read This!" and "Ordering Info".

* The sliding walls now SLIDE!  They look VERY COOL!  The noise they make
  when they are triggered is kinda soft, so we're beefing that up a bit.

* Can everyone find the hidden level? (WITHOUT USING W-F10?)  It's been
  totally re-drawn!

* We added Mouse Sensitivity!  No more MouseArm affliction!  (Hopefully)
  Let Uncle John give you a little hint: Don't just use the mouse by itself!
  Use the mouse AND the keyboard!  I use the mouse for turning left & right,
  firing and strafing.  Use the keys for accelerated turning, moving forward
  and backward, and for Super Speed (SHIFT KEY).  Only by mastering this
  control combination can you declare yourself a Master Wolfenstein Player.

* That annoying flashing thing in the top-left-corner is GONE!  TOAST!

* Whenever you hear a dog barking, but don't see anything but guards --
  you know what I'm talking about -- THAT'S BECAUSE THE DOGS HAVE BETTER
  HEARING THAN THE GUARDS AND THEY HEARD YOU WHILE THEY'RE IN ANOTHER ROOM!
  DOGS CAN'T OPEN DOORS!

Please do NOT distribute.  This version of Wolfenstein 3-D is NOT
shareware, nor in the public domain.  It cannot be distributed by
any person without Apogee's written permission.

The final version will be released May 1st, 1992 into shareware.

This version is incomplete, and contains known bugs.  This version will
only allow itself to be played a pre-determined number of times, then
it will cease to function.  It will stop working beyond May 1st, 1992.
These safety measures are necessary because many of our other beta
versions have been circulated on bulletin boards.  These measures are
simply our way of playing-it-safe.

TRILOGY BETA RELEASE: 5/13/92

Okay, here's all three episodes to test.

We need to know:

o  If it ever blows up
o  If any levels are too hard or too easy
o  "   "  bosses "    "   "   "   "   "
o  If any levels look drab and boring
o  If there's enough ammo and healing in a level
o  If all the sounds sound appropriate and good

Send us your beta reports as soon as possible!
This goes out by March 22nd for sure!  Aaah!

Notes

  • This Beta version requires a date before December 25, 1992 otherwise the game hangs
  • Still identifies itself as V1.0 on the initializing screen

Beta Testers:

Here is the FINAL BETA of Id Software's Wolfenstein 3-D product.
All six episodes are finished, with the following exceptions:
        
        * All the PARs aren't set (the 1:30 ones)
        * The High Scores screen doesn't show episode #'s
       
Play them all (mostly 4-6; you've already played 2-3, right?) and
tell us what you think about the new wall graphics (lots of 'em)
and bosses.  Schabbs should now be at an appropriate level of
toughness, and Hitler is MUCH tougher.

We're releasing this game REALLY SOON -- so the first BETA reports
that come out will help us the MOST!  Thanks for everything guys.

send Jay a message requesting one.

  • When calling about information on how to join Apogee on America Online, the extension has been changed from “5703” to “6131” in the help section
  • Apogee Games Collection on the Exec-PC BBS has been changed from file collection D to R in the ordering information section
  • The ordering information for Canada has been fixed, “Edmondton” has been changed to “Edmonton”
  • The commandline parameter for activating debug cheats has been changed from -next to -goobers
  • The keys that have to be pressed to activate the debug cheats have changed from Ctrl + Tab + Enter to LAlt + LShift + Backspace
  • Getting an extra life through collecting score now requires 40,000 points whereas 20,000 points was previously enough
  • All the demos have been re-recorded

Graphical changes

  • The knife graphic has changed so as to show you with covered instead of bare hands
  • The pistol graphic has changed so as to show you with covered instead of bare hands
  • The shading of some tiles on the title screen slightly altered
  • The “Get Psyched!” sign has had a few pixels altered
  • Kevin Cloud is now credited as “Computer Artist” instead of being listed under “Manual Design”

Level design changes

  • E1L1 - The wooden room part in the level extended one tile too far toward the exit; this has been fixed
  • E1L4 - A level 4 SS Guard has been changed to a level 3 SS Guard in the second room of the level
  • E1L6 - Some cleanup done in inaccessible areas of the level
  • E1L7 - The last room before the exit has been slightly redesigned

Fixed bugs

  • The time will now be correct even if saving and loading your game
  • Added a missing secret door to E1L7
  • Some video problems fixed

Miscellaneous

  • The end screen has been slightly altered, with a “™” having been added after the game title and an exclamation mark after the “by Id Software” part
  • MAPTEMP.WL1 has been renamed to GAMEMAPS.WL1

This patch is also known as “The elevator fix”.

PATCH.DOC

To use this patch for Wolfenstein 3-D, you must copy the two files
(MAPHEAD.WL? and GAMEMAPS.WL?) to your current Wolfenstein 3-D
directory.  Doing this will erase the current equivalent files,
but that's exactly what you want to do.

This patch will allow you to access the secret level from the first
episode (first level) of the game.

that has this fix, look for file name #1WOLF12.ZIP.
