CHANGELOG.TXT

This is a list of all known versions of Wolfenstein 3D and it also includes all known changes between the versions.

Wolfenstein 3D was distributed as a Shareware, 3-Episode and 6-Episode version. A package called “Nocturnal Missions” was also distributed which upgraded the 3-Episode version into the 6-Episode version. During Alpha stages there were also separate EGA and VGA versions, but the EGA version was dropped later on in development.

Gameplay differences

  • Secret doors do not slide, they disappear when opened instead
  • There's no “End Game” option in the main menu when plaing a game

General differences

  • There is no episode selection screen
  • The help screen has a red background and green text
  • The help screen is hugely unfinished
  • There is a separate “Ordering Information” and “Read This” section in the main menu
  • The main menu cursor always starts off at “New Game” instead starting off at “Read This!” the first time
  • The memory values indicated on the initializing screen are considerably bigger
  • In the change view menu, the bottom part of the screen is blue
  • The debug cheats don't need to be activated in any way
  • The debug cheats work using F10 instead of Tab
  • The F10 + O debug cheat actually shows something useful
  • The initializing screen shows wether playing the EGA or VGA version instead of indicating the publisher
  • Using the switch in the exit elevator doesn't change its position
  • No version number displayed on the initializing screen

Graphical differences

  • The options title is slightly differently shaded
  • The face for difficulty skill 3 is slightly different
  • The high scores table looks completely different
  • The HUD weapon graphics are less shaded
  • The B.J. face graphics on the HUD are slightly different
  • The “Get Psyched!” graphic is significantly smaller
  • The pop-up windows look completely different
  • The credits screen looks completely different
  • The initializing screen uses different colors for the availability of memory for the different memory types
  • The title screen is quite different
  • The HUD key graphics are shaded differently

  • E1L1 - Some floor types are different
  • E1L1 - The secret area in the Hitler portrait is inaccessible because a table is placed in front of its entrance
  • E1L1 - The first secret room by the exit is slightly different
  • E1L1 - There's actually a secret floor code beneath the secret elevator
  • E1L2 - Some enemies are placed differently
  • E1L2 - Some rooms are larger and there are certain rooms that have later been removed
  • E1L2 - The floor type in the secret room with treasure is different
  • E1L2 - A door is missing from one of the prison cells in the prison close to the start
  • E1L3 - Some enemies are placed differently
  • E1L3 - Some floor types are different
  • E1L3 - There are some more rooms in the “room labyrinth”
  • E1L3 - Some secret areas are slightly different
  • E1L4 - Major parts of the level differ
  • E1L5 - Major parts of the level differ
  • E1L6 - Basically the same level design, but vastly more rooms
  • E1L7 - Basically the same level design, but vastly more rooms
  • E1L8 - Basically the same level design, but vastly more rooms
  • E1L9 - The level has been altered slightly, the passage that leads out in particular
  • E1L10 - The level is completely different

Bugs

  • Shooting may also causes enemies in other rooms to activate

Missing features

  • The easiest difficulty is missing
  • There is no episode selection screen
  • There's no parental advisory screen displayed during startup
  • Extra lives cannot be picked up
  • There's no victory screen when flipping the switch in an elevator; you are taken directly to the next level
  • Hans Grosse's functions have not yet been implemented

Miscellaneous

  • There's no exit screen
  • The main game .EXE is called WOLF1V.EXE

  • Getting an extra life through collecting score now requires 40,000 points whereas 20,000 points was previously enough
  • All the demos have been re-recorded

  • The knife graphic has changed so as to show you with covered instead of bare hands
  • The pistol graphic has changed so as to show you with covered instead of bare hands
  • The shading of some tiles on the title screen slightly altered
  • The “Get Psyched!” sign has had a few pixels altered
  • Kevin Cloud is now credited as “Computer Artist” instead of being listed under “Manual Design”

Level design changes

  • E1L1 - The wooden room part in the level extended one tile too far toward the exit; this has been fixed
  • E1L4 - A level 4 SS Guard has been changed to a level 3 SS Guard in the second room of the level
  • E1L6 - Some cleanup done in inaccessible areas of the level
  • E1L7 - The last room before the exit has been slightly redesigned

Fixed bugs

  • The time will now be correct even if saving and loading your game
  • Added a missing secret door to E1L7
  • Some video problems fixed

Miscellaneous

  • The end screen has been slightly altered, with a “™” having been added after the game title and an exclamation mark after the “by Id Software” part
  • MAPTEMP.WL1 has been renamed to GAMEMAPS.WL1
  • Added a new empty file, V1.1
